diving

Immerse yourself in the deep blue Azorean Sea.

This activity is adaptable to all kinds of participants, with or without experience, and can be experienced in open sea, pool, or for the more experienced and certified divers, on a private or group diving trips.

São Miguel offers divers a great variety of diving sites that can be chosen by divers accordingly to their experience and certification. For beginners the Dori archeologic park, a Liberty class sunk ship, laid on a sand bank, not very deep and close to Ponta Delgada City is a very good choice. For intermediate divers one of the best spots is the marine reserve of Vila Franca Islet or the Lourenços or Sabrina reefs, both very close to the coast, and where is quite common to see groups of Manta Rays and large pelagic fish.

For experienced, skilled and certified divers, São Miguel Island is also known as point of departure for the two worldwide renowned and mythical diving spots, located in open sea – the Formigas Islet and the Dolabarat sea mountain.

bird
watching

Being centrally located in the Atlantic Ocean, rich in lagoons, native and exotic forests, wide coastal areas with cliffs, beaches, and ports, allows us to find almost 400 different species of birds.

In São Miguel Island we even can find one of the rarest and endemic bird in Europe – the Azores bullfinch. Having the presence of so many species in Azores allows birdwatching on land or even on sea, by boat.

If you are a worldwide birdwatching lover or at least a fan don’t miss the chance to grab this experience.

watching

During your stay, don’t miss one of the top experiences in the Azores. Whale watching is the perfect activity for nature lovers, as it allows you to observe different species of animals - whales, dolphins, turtles, and several species of birds - in their natural habitat.

This activity includes a briefing, which consists of a lecture about the activity itself and about the kind of species that can be spotted (both residents and migrators), with the attendance of a marine biologist on board.

For the more adventurous, we recommend a trip on a semi-rigid boat. Alternatively, the others can always choose to board a catamaran (a more comfortable boat with two floors and sanitary facilities).

With over 500 years of History, the Azores developed a humanized natural landscape, that follows the development of the settlements and the shared experiences of these nine small “lost paradises” on the Atlantic Ocean. From ancient trails left by the first settlers, to the dirt roads that still exist on forest and dairy milk exploration zones, to the more modern mountain roads lined with azaleas and hydrangeas, the Azores have 9 of the most fiery scenarios for the true lovers of cycling or for the ones that want to get to know the sport, or even for the ones that want the double pleasure of getting to know their vacation destination in an alternative and ecologic manner.

Discover with us the 10 road, 5 cross-country and 15 enduro routes that we have prepared for you in São Miguel Island.
